MORE THAN AN OFFBEAT HILL STATION
Chakrata sits where cantonment history, Jaunsar-Bawar culture and deep western Himalayan forest meet.
Chakrata Cantonment Board states that the cantonment was established in 1869 and lies about 90 km from Dehradun. Its city history also places Chakrata in the middle of the Jaunsar-Bawar region and records earlier nineteenth-century settlement activity under British administration. This history still matters to modern travellers because Chakrata is not an ordinary unrestricted hill municipality. It remains a cantonment environment where responsible behaviour around sensitive locations is part of the travel experience.
Uttarakhand Tourism’s master planning work identifies the Jaunsar-Bawar region around Chakrata as a cultural tourism resource, highlighting its villages, local traditions and architecture. Dehradun district also documents local fairs such as Bissu, held around Chakrata and associated with Jaunsari cultural heritage and the harvesting season. That means LN Tourism should avoid presenting local communities as decorative “tribal attractions.” Jaunsar-Bawar should be approached as a living cultural region, with respectful village interactions and photography only with consent.
The district describes Chakrata’s surrounding forests in terms of conifers, rhododendrons and oaks, with the northern subdivision particularly suited to nature walking and trekking. Uttarakhand Tourism separately identifies Deoban for trekking/birding and describes its deodar cover and Himalayan views. This forest identity is the strongest reason Chakrata should not be written like Mussoorie. There is no need to invent a large commercial attraction list.
The wider Chakrata–Tyuni axis continues into deeper Jaunsar-Bawar. Hanol, for example, is associated with the Mahasu Devta tradition; Dehradun district places it about 120 km along the Chakrata–Tyuni road and documents its major August fair. This is a longer cultural extension-not normal Chakrata local sightseeing.
