Facts checked on 12 October 2026 by LN Tourism operations team
Dussehra is Tuesday, 20 October 2026. If Monday is approved leave and your weekend is free, 17-20 October can be a four-day trip. Choose the experience first, then verify travel time, rooms, activities and cancellation terms.
This guide helps you choose a trip that still leaves time to be there.
A Tuesday holiday appears on the calendar. Suddenly four days feel possible. Then you notice the Monday in between. You may already have Mussoorie on one screen, a riverside stay on another, and an optimistic group chat insisting that everything is “near Delhi.” None of those tabs tells you how much holiday you will actually spend travelling. Think of planning dussehra weekend trips from delhi.
For Dussehra 2026, the useful question is not simply where to go. It is whether your free days, the journey and the experience fit together.
Tuesday 20 October is listed as a gazetted Dussehra holiday on the Government of India calendar.
Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 are only free if your schedule makes them free.
Monday 19 needs separate leave or an applicable holiday.
Once that is clear, you can choose a trip you will have time to enjoy.
Imagine a Delhi NCR traveller looking at the calendar on Sunday night. They picture three nights away, a slow breakfast on Tuesday and a return before work resumes. Then their colleague asks the obvious question: “Do you have Monday off?” That single answer changes the trip more than any hotel photo.
If Saturday and Sunday are regular days off and Monday leave is approved, 17 to 20 October can make a four-calendar-day window. A Saturday departure and Tuesday return may allow three nights away. If Monday is a working day, those dates do not form one continuous break. You could still use Saturday and Sunday for a simpler two-day trip, or leave after work on Monday for a very short stay, but do not sell either version to yourself as four unhurried days.
Check the actual hours, not only dates. A Friday-night departure may create more destination time, but only if everyone can leave, the transport exists, the stay allows the arrival time and the first morning will not be lost to exhaustion. A Tuesday return is only a free day until the train, flight or drive claims it. Families should verify school calendars too; employers and schools need not follow the same leave pattern.
Decision to make now: write your available departure time, approved Monday status, required return time and realistic number of nights on one line. If you cannot fill in that line, do not book the room yet.
The illustrative traveller’s group chat has three different holidays in mind.
One person wants a quiet balcony and walks.
Another wants water and an active morning.
A third wants to stay beside a lake with no packed sightseeing list.
Searching “best places near Delhi” hides this disagreement behind a long scroll of names. Choose the morning you want to wake up to, then see whether the journey leaves enough time to have it.
For a hill-town morning, Mussoorie is a useful starting point. The official Uttarakhand Tourism page describes its ridge setting and broad views. In this article, the promise is an evening walk and time to sit, not a claim of empty roads or a particular valley-view room. If you want Landour or Dhanaulti too, resist turning each into a timed checkpoint. One satisfying base often beats a three-stop race. LN’s separate Delhi–Mussoorie guide handles detailed route questions: https://www.lntourism.com/blog/delhi-to-mussoorie-distance-route-guide .
For a river morning, consider Rishikesh. The Ganga, ghats and riverside pace support a short break even if you skip adventure entirely. If rafting is the point of the trip, ask for the exact operator, stretch, timing, age or fitness requirements, weather conditions and cancellation rule before making it the centrepiece. A river activity belongs in your itinerary only after it is confirmed for your dates. LN’s Rishikesh destination page has place-specific detail: https://www.lntourism.com/destinations/rishikesh .
For a lake morning, Bhimtal may appeal more than a busy checklist. Uttarakhand Tourism describes it as a lake town adjoining Nainital. The appeal here is a stay near the water and enough unassigned time to use it. That choice must survive the longer-feeling transit from your actual NCR starting point. Do not add Nainital sightseeing and a separate temple visit just because both fit on the map; they can consume the day you meant to spend resting.
A pin can look close while the day around it disappears. Start the clock at your home or agreed NCR pickup, not at a convenient city-centre marker. Count the ride to a railway station or airport, waiting time, the onward transfer, hill approach, check-in and the return in the opposite direction. If a quoted “six-hour drive” excludes your actual pickup, stops or local traffic, it is not six hours of your holiday.
For a four-day window, mark Saturday as a likely travel-and-arrival day and Tuesday as a return day. That leaves Sunday and Monday as the most dependable full destination days. A plan that uses both for moving between hotels has spent the heart of the break in a vehicle. With only Saturday and Sunday free, even one long outbound journey can make a celebrated destination feel like a rest stop.
Run a simple fit test.
Key Questions
What time would you reach the room, with daylight and meal stops accounted for?
What time must you leave it on the final day?
How many complete mornings remain?
Would the trip still feel worthwhile if one activity is cancelled?
This is a better filter than a kilometre total alone. It also helps explain why a deeper route such as Auli may deserve a longer holiday from Delhi; read the separate Delhi-Auli comparison instead of folding it into this quick-break plan: https://www.lntourism.com/blog/delhi-to-mussoorie-distance-route-guide .
Decision to make now: reject any route that leaves fewer full mornings at the destination than your group needs to feel away. Put actual pickup and return points into the calculation.
Now test the plan against what can actually be booked.
This is the moment when a saved trip becomes a real one. “Rooms available” is too vague.
Ask for the property name, room category, exact dates, meal basis, check-in and check-out times, accessibility or parking needs, and whether the quoted room is still held.
A photograph of a hotel is not proof that the same view or room is yours.
Do the same for transport.
Specify whether pickup is from home, an NCR hub, Delhi station, airport, Dehradun or another city.
Ask what vehicle serves your group, when it reports, where it drops you, and how many hours or kilometres the quote covers if those limits apply.
If the package starts at Dehradun, the Delhi-to-Dehradun leg is not magically included.
LN’s Mussoorie-Landour-Dhanaulti page, for example, currently describes a Dehradun or Haridwar start; a Delhi traveller should request a separate end-to-end quote before treating it as a Delhi package: https://www.lntourism.com/packages/mussoorie-landore-dhanaulti .
Treat activities as separate confirmations. A safari depends on the correct permit, zone and reporting instructions; do not pay for a wildlife-centred trip because someone says a permit is “usually available.” A river activity needs an operator and an operating decision for the day. Ropeways and viewpoints may have their own tickets, queues or closures. Ask which items are included, which are optional, and who refunds what if an activity cannot run.
Then compare two written offers on the same basis: dates, pickup, vehicle, named stay, number of nights, meals, included sightseeing, activity and entry fees, taxes or driver costs, payment schedule, cancellation terms, and change rules. A low headline amount may exclude a leg the other offer includes. A higher quote might buy the exact room location or simpler journey you actually chose. Do not compare only the final number.
Before paying, check route and weather advice through official channels and your operator. A seasonal description cannot guarantee the road or weather on 17-20
October. Allow for delay on the return day.
Decision to make now: request a dated written plan and a clear payment or cancellation policy. If any central piece is only verbal, treat the plan as provisional.
Suppose the hillside room you wanted is gone. Do you need Mussoorie itself, or do you need a quiet hill morning? If the second answer is true, look at a different stay area or a simpler nearby hill plan. Keep the essential experience and change the geography. Do not accept an awkward hotel transfer just to preserve a familiar destination name.
If rafting cannot be confirmed, a Rishikesh trip can still be worth taking if your real aim is a riverside break. If water sports were the entire reason, choose another date or another available activity rather than calling the fallback equivalent. If a lakeside room is unavailable, compare whether a nearby lake-base stay preserves the unhurried pace; if it does not, drop the lake idea rather than overpaying for a poor substitute.
Decision to make now: name one acceptable fallback for your primary feeling. If neither the first choice nor the fallback can be confirmed, change the date instead of buying an itinerary you already know you will resent.
Send LN Tourism the dates you can actually travel, your exact Delhi or NCR starting point, group size and ages where relevant, preferred number of nights, the experience you want, and your one non-negotiable. Ask for a written plan showing pickup and drop, named stay or proposed category, meal basis, inclusions, optional activities, payment schedule and cancellation terms. If you want a Mussoorie circuit, the published package page is a starting reference, not a promise that those dates or a Delhi pickup are included.
Contact LN Tourism at +91 88588-73018 or https://www.lntourism.com/services/domestic-tours . Ask for the version that leaves you time to be there.
The Government of India calendar lists Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Check your own employer or school calendar for how the holiday applies to you.
Usually yes if Monday is a normal working day for you. The four-day 17-20 October window needs Saturday and Sunday free plus an approved Monday off and the Tuesday holiday.
Yes, but plan a genuine weekend trip for Saturday and Sunday, or another short window that matches your schedule. Avoid booking three nights while assuming Monday will be free.
A Saturday departure and Tuesday return can fit three nights if your transport and check-in times work. That is an illustrative shape, not a confirmed package.
Only if the departure is practical for everyone, arrival and check-in are clear, and the saved time is worth the fatigue. Compare it with an early Saturday start.
Door-to-door travel time, traffic, breaks, local transfers and the number of full mornings left at the destination. A shorter kilometre figure can still produce a tiring day.
Choose Mussoorie if the priority is a hill-town stay and walks; choose Rishikesh if the river setting is central. These are editorial fits, not guarantees about crowds, weather or availability.
Possibly, but only after checking the extra transfer and hotel change against your available days. One base may leave more time to enjoy the trip.
If that activity is your main reason to travel, confirm its date-specific availability, operator or permit and cancellation terms before making a non-refundable stay booking.
Exact travel dates, pickup and drop, vehicle, stay and room category, meals, included and excluded activities, fees, payment schedule, cancellation rules and what happens if a planned activity cannot operate.
It may be possible, but the Delhi-to-Dehradun leg must be explicitly added and priced. A Dehradun or Haridwar package page does not by itself include Delhi pickup.
Keep the experience you want and test a nearby base or a simpler plan. If the substitute removes the reason for the trip, change dates rather than accepting it.
